Kashmir’s history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of human habitation found in the region since prehistoric times. Over the centuries, Kashmir has been home to several civilizations, including the early Vedic people, who left behind sacred texts and scriptures.

One of the earliest recorded rulers of Kashmir was King Ashoka, the great Mauryan emperor, who spread Buddhism across the region in the 3rd century BCE. His legacy can still be seen in the ancient Buddhist monasteries and Stupas that dot the Kashmiri landscape.

In the 8th century CE, it is  witnessed the arrival of Islam, brought by traders and missionaries from Central Asia and Persia. Islam gradually took root in the region, leading to the establishment of a vibrant Islamic culture.

However, it was during the medieval period that Kashmir truly flourished as a center of art, literature, and spirituality under the rule of the Kashmiri Hindu kings, particularly the Karkota and Lohara dynasties.
